This September, The Esoterics will perform a series of choral concerts inspired by the poetic contemplation of the eternal. ÆONIA, coming from coming from the Latin word for ‘eternity,’ will feature new compositions by the three winners of POLYPHONOS, The Esoterics’ annual choral composition competition:  Stephen Feigenbaum, Joseph Gregorio, and Iman Habibi. As well, the ensemble will reprise Stars forever, while we sleep, an unaccompanied choral symphony setting nine poems by Sara Teasdale, written by The Esoterics’ composer-in-residence Donald Skirvin. In addition, the group will premiere I am among them, a 20-minute stream-of-consciousness meditation – on life, its struggles, and the hereafter – composed by The Esoterics founding director, Eric Banks. In this work, Banks set verses by Dan-Eric Slocum, a friend of The Esoterics who took his own life in February 2012. Slocum was a local journalist and poet, who published his own verses in a blog called The eternity door.

In effort to inspire social consciousness through choral art, the ensemble will commemorate September as “suicide prevention month” through this concert. Each of the composers who wrote for ÆONIA was asked to set “eternal” verses penned by poets who lost their lives by their own hand. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from this concert series will be donated to Beyond the Bridge, a local foundation that supports LGBTQ youth who are at risk of suicide.
