Join The Esoterics as they host PHILOMELA:
The nightingales from Finland
As part of its mission of supporting contemporary choral music, The Esoterics strives to forge and strengthen connections with organizations that share the group’s passion for stretching the boundaries of choral traditions. In its travels to Europe (in 2000 and 2006), the group found such a kindred spirit in Philomela, the acclaimed Finnish women’s chorus. The two choruses have met and sung together on two separate occasions, but never in the United States; so The Esoterics is proud and honored to be hosting Philomela, and its director, Marjukka Riihimäki, in Seattle this summer.
Philomela is noted for its dramatic Baltic sound, its experimental choreography, and its chameleon-like tapestry of voices and costumes. Award-winning conductor Marjukka Riihimäki is a living treasure in her native Finland, and under her leadership, Philomela has become a favorite with critics and audiences throughout Europe. Philomela has mastered both traditional and modern music, sacred and secular repertoire, with singing styles that originate from the Finnish national epic (the Kalevala), as well as works by contemporary composers, many of whom have dedicated works to the group. Philomela has produced numerous recordings, and in 1991, it received the Amateur Music Award from the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation. Philomela was also awarded Choir of the Year by the Finnish Women's Choir Association.
In this concert, there will be a short set of works by American women composers, sung by The Esoterics. After this opening set, Philomela will present a program of living Finnish composers, who combine folk tradition within their own music styles, and will include compositions by Sanna Kurki-Suonio, Anna-Mari Kähärä, Aija Puurtinen, Tellu Turkka, Päivi Järvinen, Toni Edelmann, and Jarkko Riihimäki.
