AGONIA: Considering agony and comfort for the afflicted

In this poignant program of timeless medieval poetry set by modern composers, The Esoterics will perform Ned Rorem’s haunting cantata In time of pestilence, Alfred Schnittke’s devastatingly mystical Verses of repentance, and the lament and triumph of John Joubert’s Pro pace motets.

EKSTASIA: Pursuing ecstasy and the search for the divine

The ensemble welcomes Skyros String Quartet to present choral settings of poetry by Edgar Allan Poe, Mechtild of Magdeburg, and Dan-Eric Slocum: Tarik O’Regan’s The ecstasies above, Aaron Jay Kernis’ Ecstatic meditations, Eric Banks’ I am among them, as well as Of seasons have I sung by composer-and-poet Charlie Leftridge.

AUDACIOR: Admiring boldness and the fearlessness of heart

This audacious program will present Francis Poulenc’s inimitable masterpiece setting poems by the imprisoned Paul Eluard, Figure humaine, as well as works by Abbie Betinis and Timothy Takach, and the world premiere of HARMONIA composer Dominick DiOrio’s The visible world, with texts by Oscar Wilde.

This program will feature three world premieres by the winners of last year’s POLYPHONOS competition: Michael Gilbertson, Karen Seigel, and Hasan Uçarsu, Aaron Jay Kernis’ The wheel of time, the dance, setting poems by Wendell Berry, as well as Eric Banks’ setting of Constantine Cavafy: This delicate universe.

For its final concert of Season 22, the ensemble will celebrate the centennial of the Russian composer Georgy Sviridov with a program that includes Nightly clouds, Pushkin’s garland, and his Choral concerto.
