QUODLIBET: Music to Rejoice, Reflect, and Remember

Rainbow City Band will present a concert on World AIDS Day to demonstrate support for people who are living with HIV and AIDS, and to honor those who have died from the disease. The concert will be held on December 1, 2012, 7pm, at Edmonds Center for the Arts, with a reception afterwards to view a portion of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt. The title of the concert is Quodlibet: Music to Rejoice, Reflect, and Remember.

In Quodlibet, Rainbow City Band will collaborate with The Esoterics, a Seattle vocal ensemble, to perform the West Coast premiere of Quilt Panels (for my love, for my grief, for my letting go). Quilt Panels is a 40-minute song cycle for concert band and chorus that reflects the story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Composer Robert Maggio, who will be attending Rainbow City Band’s performance, originally wrote the musical piece nearly ten years ago for D.C.’s Different Drummers and the Lesbian & Gay Chorus of Washington, D.C. Quilt Panels first premiered on December 1, 2003 and has not been performed since then.

“The texts sung by the chorus come from a variety of sources, including: names provided by the members of the chorus and band of loved ones they wish to remember, remembrances in the form of letters from the contributors to the Quilt, a list of materials found on the Quilt, instructions on how to make a Quilt Panel, and the words from a familiar lullaby (The Little Horses),” Maggio writes in his notes about Quilt Panels.

Anne Kreider, Artistic Director of Rainbow City Band, discussed logistics of the concert with Eric Banks, Founding Director of The Esoterics, and was introduced to the term quodlibet, which is the title of the concert.

“[Banks] explained the term to me as a Latin word for a ‘patchwork’ of music, it seemed to be a perfect fit for our title,” recalls Kreider.

Quodlibet is a term used to describe a collage or patchwork of music, literally translating to ‘what pleases.’ The patchwork of music in the second half of our concert is used to mirror our performance of Quilt Panels for World AIDS Day. The first half of the concert is a single piece that is a musical depiction of a quilt made up of a collage of images. The second half of the concert is made up of a collage of musical pieces to create a quilt of winter memories.”

Tickets to Rainbow City Band’s Quodlibet concert can be purchased online at, or by calling the box office at 425-275-9595. General Admission tickets are $20, or $15 for seniors and youth. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit local organization(s) serving people living with HIV/AIDS.
