VILLAROSA

A Swedish symphony for unaccompanied voices

Composed between 1993 and 2001, Thomas Jennefelt’s seven-movement symphony for voices combines the meditative qualities of minimalist tone clusters with the drama of vibrant melodic lines to craft a unique choral experience that is at once peaceful and exhilarating. In Jennefelt’s Villarosa sequences, the traditional role of text is challenged: musical ideas serve as the inspiration for a series of Latinate lyrics, which were purposefully crafted by the composer to complement his musical vision. In addition to Jennefelt’s seven-sequence symphony, The Esoterics will also perform his 1990 motet, Music for a big church; for tranquility. We hope that you will join us at the West Coast premiere of these innovative and inspiring works!
